Playgrounds aren’t what they used to be, and that’s a good thing!

In 2025, communities across the country are going beyond the basics to create smarter, more inclusive, and more imaginative spaces. As playgrounds are increasingly recognized as important spaces for physical, cognitive, emotional, social development and intergenerational play, schools and communities are willing to invest in them.

At Cunningham Recreation, we work with cities, HOAs, schools, and parks departments to design playgrounds that spark joy, foster connection, and support lifelong wellness. Here are the top five playground trends for 2025 that are shaping the future of play.

When people think of school, they often picture desks, computers, and tests. But the real magic of education doesn’t just happen inside the classroom; it happens outside of it, too. On the soccer field. In the sand. On the slides. In other words, it happens during recess.

Here in the U.S., kids get an average of 25 to 30 minutes of recess time per day. But, the actual amount can vary between schools, grade levels, and individual teachers. For instance, some schools offer two 15-minute recesses plus a longer lunch break, while others may have a single 25-minute recess.

Let’s be honest—nothing brings neighbors together quite like well-designed parks and playgrounds. Whether it’s toddlers climbing up equipment, teens shooting hoops, or parents catching up under the pavilion, shared outdoor spaces are where community happens. This is why more and more communities are building parks or upgrading neighborhood playgrounds, especially in Homeowner’s Associations (HOAs).

That’s where small-scale parks shine. Also known as pocket parks or mini/micro parks, these compact spaces can deliver outsized benefits for neighborhoods, schools, and churches, particularly those located in urban areas.
